To tell the truth, Mauritius has never been part of shortlist to visit absolutely absolutely absolutely.
If we discovered this beautiful island, it is thanks to my sista…
Being happy to announce her future wedding (great !!) and her desire to celebrate it in Mauritius, I think immediately palm trees, blue sea, sun… And all immediately after then, at the face of my banker…
“Why Mauritius ? It is so faaaar!” I asked her.
She answered: “Because I have always dreamt of getting married on an island, by the sea.”
But l’Ile-de-France it’s nice too, find a spot near La Seine and you will have your atmosphere “at the water’s edge”. There, she gave me the black look that says everything: “This is not funny at all, sister”.
And there, I understood that sometimes it is better to say nothing, forget about my banker and enjoy life!! Cheers to marriages, cheers to Love, cheers to the sun! Let’s BackPack Our Kids again and Mauritius here we come !!
Tickets bought, summer outfits in the suitcase, good I once again forgot essential things like hats and glasses but never mind!!
Thank you Raf for not listening to me…
We rented a car as he had suggested so well and we could travel the whole island easily (for info we drive on the left in Mauritius).
As the marriage was planned near FLIC-EN-FLAC, it is there that we have elected domicile, in the West of the island.
5 minutes walk from a huge beach… FLIC-EN-FLAC is one of the largest beach of the island.
There are several inexpensive, well-located and well-maintained accommodations in there.
All around which one has the chance to have several local shops: supermarket SPAR, street sellers of fruits and vegetables, food-trucks along the beach, etc. Raf enjoyed the sandwiches of fish vindaye! A typical Mauritian dish, a true delight!
FLIC-EN-FLAC a very lively city, weekends Mauritian families gather around giant picnics and they party! Music, dance, the atmosphere is great! It’s nice to see all these people happy to live.
We stumbled on the huge beach early in the morning when everything was quiet… You feel like you are alone in the world…
Regarding the rest of the island, a spot not to be missed with the children is CASELA Park. Very close to FLIC-EN-FLAC.
The park is so vast, a summary of the fauna and flora of the island. We opted for the bus ride, the kids loved it! On the way to the zebras, ostriches and deer walk.
We saw beautiful birds, but the kids were especially impressed by the huge bats that flew over the park: “Look, it’s Batman!” told us Dayi 😉
The whole site is super well maintained, we know why we pay 20 euros per head. 😉
We continue on the chapter of colors and greenery, the next day direction Pamplemousse Park.
The trees are the stars of this magnificent park: peppers, cinnamon trees, palm trees. The tree that impressed most kids is the Baobab.
And the water lilies! With the kids, we experienced the waterproofing of water lilies, we sprinkled them with water and … Not even wet! Our aspiring scientists were very impressed, good after 15 mins of ‘Look Mommy it is not wet, and this one either, wait till I started looking… “, it was difficult to disconnect them from there.
Another very nice park to do with the kids, the park La Vanille. Especially to see the giant turtles very closely. They have all ages. We saw babies, teenagers, adults and the most vigils, the oldest one was 108 years!
We start with Le Morne Beach which is an unmissable place of Mauritius with this inevitable rock that overlooks the sea. 5 star hotels along the beach offer you the service you dream of.
Let’s go on the other side of the island to the east towards the beach of BELLE MARE. It is bordered by 5-star hotels. So be aware that on this island, all the beaches are public. So you can sit opposite a 5 star, you have the right! And that’s great!
The Mauritians feared that all their beaches would be privatized. So they asked for everything to be public and they won. BRAVO!! And thank you!!
The beaches are public but can not be reached via the hotels. So to get to this beach we had a little trouble but we found an access!
You have to go to the Long Beach Resort and before the exchange office turn right go straight to park along the hotel wall, head for the beach and there yahoo! All these colors! The turquoise blue, the green, and the black of the rocks on the water that gives a volcanic character to the landscape…
Larger also. Our favorite was the MONT CHOISY beach.
We went there on a public holiday and we could see the whole population diversity of Mauritius. Wonderful all its different faces that mix, share the beach, music, sun, dishes of different food truck.
This is our best holiday memory. This melting pot under the sun fascinated us and enchanted us.
The waterfall of CHAMAREL: at 100 meters high we admire the waterfall and we try to make a passage between the tourists to take pictures.
Then direction the land of seven colors of CHAMAREL. Access fees are: 200 Rs / adult, 100 Rs / child under 12 years. So do not expect a big expense, it’s not the Grand Canyon! But it is a nice walk around a clearing that presents 7 different colors. We played with the kids to rediscover the colors, we found red, gold, purple and brown 4 out of 7, congratulations kids!
We can not finish this post without mentioning the event of this stay … The marriage of sista A marriage of dream! It had everything: gorgeous grooms, romantic natural scenery, beach, sunset sea and a crazy atmosphere!
Cheers to the Married! You were right, a wedding in Mauritius is so much better than a wedding in Ile de France 😉
